Wood Siding
Wood is a continuing favorite choice for siding among residential homes. Wood
siding is available in an array of color options and with proper maintenance it
can last up to 30 years! Wood siding comes in both vertical and horizontal
designs (clapboards, shakes, and shingles), or vertical wood siding (board and
batten). Wood siding is also available in a wide variety of wood species such as
redwood, cedar, pine, fir, and spruce. Due to the variety of woods to choose
from, it is very easy to create an exceptional appeal to the exterior of your
home. Wood does require a certain amount of maintenance, but if properly kept,
it will last you for years to come. If you fail to properly maintain your wood
siding, it may fall victim to pest infestation, mold growth and wood
deterioration.
Wood Siding Types
Wood siding is available in a variety of patterns, thicknesses and designs.
Listed below are some of the most common types to choose from.
- Bevel Siding – Formed by re-sawing lumber at an angle to create two pieces, with
one edge thicker than the other.
- Channel Siding – Installed vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. Each board
partially overlaps the next, creating a channeling effect.
- Tongue and Groove Siding – Installed vertically, horizontally, and diagonally.
It’s a pattern of boards that fit and lock together, usually with V-shaped
joints.
- Board and Batten – A vertical design created by using cedar boards spaced apart
with narrower boards, also called battens, covering the joins.
- Round Log Siding – Rounded texture on exterior logs.
- Split Log Siding – Similar appearance to a log cabin exterior.
- Ship Lap Siding – An overlapping style of siding.
- Flat Log Siding – Can be used as both an interior and exterior siding. Has a
flat surface instead of rounded.
- Hard Board Lap Siding – A reasonably priced composite lap siding frequently
found covering the exteriors of track homes.
- Lapped Wood Siding – Simulates a solid wood lap siding and consists of pieces of
lap board stacked on each other in a regular horizontal pattern.

Vinyl Siding Colors
Vinyl is an amazing siding product because it is extremely fast and easy to
install, and once it is finished you don’t have to do anything to it ever again,
besides a simple wash here and there. I particularly enjoy the way vinyl can
transform an old worn down house into a beautiful masterpiece in just a day or
two!

Vinyl Siding Installation
Choosing a siding contractor is one of the first decisions to make when
considering to have your home resided. Picking a contractor to work on your home
is like selecting a beautician to style your hair. It’s not safe to just go to
anyone because too many things could go wrong. If you do take that risk and
something does go wrong, your home, just like the hair on your head, can be
viewed and insulted by just about anyone. Unfortunately, they haven’t invented
hats for houses yet.

Painting Siding
Painting vinyl siding is advised against. Vinyl is a material that expands and
contrast causing paint to crack and chip off. For best results, it is
recommended to have your vinyl siding replaced. Today’s vinyl is more durable,
with lasting appeal. When it comes to worn out aluminum siding, paint is a cost
effective means to creating a fresh new look for your exterior. Homeowners can
choose from a wide range of colors to create a lasting finish. However, there is
a certain amount of surface preparation needed for aluminum siding to be
painted.
